The refreshed AT series replaced the first generation in Australia in October 1987, a rebadged and lightly restyled Mazda 626 sedan and TX5 hatchback. A station wagon on a different platform that was only sold in Japan and New Zealand was added, and in Japan this generation was sold from May 1987. Ford later replaced it in most markets with the Mondeo, which was developed as a world car. The Telstar was a Mazda 626 with Ford badges and some local styling, sold where Ford wanted a mid size car.
