In 1983, to raise the fuel economy of the Econoline without a major loss of engine output, Ford introduced an option of a 6.9 litre diesel V8 and other economy measures. It was a body on frame van with a three speed automatic or manual transmission, and the 1983 van was built in Ohio. It was the best selling full size van in the United States from 1980 until the Transit replaced the vans in 2014. The E Series was Ford's full size van, sold as the Econoline and Club Wagon and as a cutaway chassis.
