In the May 1981 facelift of the TE71 two new trim levels were added to the lineup, the cheaper S with a shorter front bumper and the better optioned APEX with standard sport seats. It was the last model year covered for the Toyota Sprinter Trueno (TE71 series), 1979 to 1982, and the Toyota Sprinter Trueno (AE85 and AE86 series) came next, following the 1980 model year.
