The third generation of the Sprinter Trueno and Corolla Levin, the TE71, was released in May 1979, powered by the same 115 PS fuel injected 2T-GEU engine as the previous generation. This was the first model year of the Toyota Sprinter Trueno (TE71 series), 1979 to 1982, which took over from the Toyota Sprinter Trueno (TE37 to TE65 series); the 1980 model year follows it.
