The turbocharged 1.8 liter engine of the Lancer EX became available in Japan too from May 1981, though it was discontinued in 1983 after the smaller Lancer Fiore was introduced. The 1800 GT Turbo, the same as the GSR Turbo but with different body trim, was sold in 1981 to 1983. The Lancer EX was a four door sedan of the second generation and was a popular rally car base in New Zealand. Silent Shaft technology used two counterbalancing shafts to cancel vibration.
