The Lancer EX was introduced with a 1.8 liter turbocharged inline four option known as the 1800 GSR and GT Turbo in 1980, 135 PS and not intercooled, after the 1.8 liter Sirius 80 engine joined the range. New Zealand importer Todd Motors assembled the new Lancer EX from 1980 with a 1.6 liter carburetor engine and manual or automatic transmission, and it became a popular base for rally cars there. Its MCA-Jet clean air system let it pass both Japanese and American emission standards.
