The Lancer EX was replaced in New Zealand by the front wheel drive Tredia in 1982, with the Cordia coupe effectively replacing the earlier Celeste. From 1982 the Lancer was derived from the subcompact front wheel drive Mirage, whose sedan variant was released in 1982 and sold with a twin as the Lancer Fiore through the new Galant Store dealers in Japan. The Fiore suffix distinguished it from the older rear wheel drive Lancers.
