The Spectron name was also introduced for the Japanese market in 1981, on the facelifted version of the second generation Bongo. The first generation of the Bongo was the best selling Mazda vehicle from its introduction until 1981, when it was surpassed by the front wheel drive Mazda Familia. The facelift of January 1981 brought rectangular headlights. It also formed the basis for the long running Kia Bongo range. The Bongo was also known as the Ford Econovan and Eunos Cargo, and it has been built with rear, middle and front mounted engines.
