To produce the Durango of 1981, National Coach Works used the body of the Ford Fairmont Futura two door coupe, removing the roof behind the B pillar, the trunk lid and the rear seat, and adding a flat floor fiberglass cargo bed and a new rear window. It was built by National Coach Works of Los Angeles rather than on a Ford assembly line. The Durango was a coupe utility conversion of the Fairmont Futura that Ford sold through its dealers in small numbers.
