In 1980 the Starlet was facelifted to include square headlights, one of two facelifts of the second generation. The car was by then being exported widely, and the three door KP61 was preparing for its United States launch the next year. It was model year 2 of 4 in the Toyota Starlet (second generation, P60), 1978 to 1983, coming after the 1979 model year and before the 1981 model year.
