1980 was the last year of the first generation Granada and of the ESS, which ran from 1978 to 1980, and of the Mercury Monarch, which was replaced in 1981 by a Cougar. It was sold in the unnamed base trim and the ESS before the move to the Fox chassis and a smaller mid size body. For 1980 Mercury also moved the Cougar to the Fox chassis, and its sales collapsed by nearly 65 percent. The model line was marketed as a luxury compact, with the Fox chassis car to follow in 1981.
