In 1979 the Granada was in its fifth year as a compact luxury sedan, sold in an unnamed base trim and the ESS, with a rear wheel drive chassis derived from the Falcon of 1960 to 1965. The Fox chassis that would take over from it in 1981 was already used for the 1979 Ford Mustang, and the LTD was downsized that year, but the Granada itself kept the older chassis. The Monarch remained its Mercury counterpart.
