For 1978 the exterior of the Granada underwent a mid cycle revision concentrating on the front fascia, and the European Sport Sedan, or ESS, was introduced as a replacement for the Sports Coupe, produced from 1978 to 1980. Mercury sold a Monarch ESS. In Europe the second generation Granada, produced from 1977 to 1982, adopted design features similar to the four door American car. Trim lines now included the unnamed base trim, and the Sports Coupe it replaced had run for model years 1976 and 1977.
