Mitsubishi added the moderately more powerful 1.6 liter Saturn engine to the range in March 1979, for the 88 PS 1600 GT model. The first generation Mirage of 1979 was a front wheel drive subcompact, sold in Japan through the Car Plaza retail chain and in North America as the Dodge Colt and Plymouth Champ. In the United States and Canada the first four generations were sold through a venture with Chrysler as the Dodge Colt and the Plymouth Champ and Colt.
