The Mirage was launched in March 1978 as a front wheel drive three door hatchback in response to the 1973 oil crisis, followed in September by a five door hatchback on a longer wheelbase. Chrysler imported the first generation Mirage to North America as the Dodge Colt and Plymouth Champ from late 1978 for the 1979 model year, in three door form only at first. The Mirage hatchback models of 1978 to 2003 were classed as subcompact cars, while the sedan and wagon, sold as the Lancer, were compact.
