In 1979 the carburetted 630CS was replaced with the 628CSi, a car with a fuel injected 2.8 liter engine taken from the E12 528i. This gave the E24 a three model range of 628CSi, 633CSi and 635CSi that would continue for the coming years, with the 635CSi as the top model and the 628CSi as the entry car. The 628CSi was the entry level car from 1979, and the engine came from the E12 528i. The new car also stood beside the 633CSi and the more powerful 635CSi.
