Ford gave the Courier a fresh look in 1977, with the more blocky and angular styling of the early 1980s. The base engine stayed the 1.8 litre VB four cylinder engine of the first generation, though a Ford built 2.3 litre was an option. It was still sold as a rebadged version of the Mazda B series. It began as a sedan delivery, became a Mazda built compact pickup, and later a Fiesta based van and coupe utility. The Courier was a Ford nameplate used on very different vehicles in different places and years, from sedan deliveries to pickups and vans.
