Although 1975 was the last year for the Mercury Comet GT, the GT features remained available in 1976 and 1977 with the Sports Accent option group. The Comet continued with comparatively few changes as the Mercury version of the Maverick, in two and four door sedans, alongside the more upscale Monarch, which had been introduced in 1975. It was available as two and four door sedans. The fifth generation Comet was the Mercury version of the Ford Maverick, with a different grille, taillights and hood.
