The Comet was offered with comparatively few changes through the 1977 model year, and was then discontinued to make room for the new Mercury Zephyr for the 1978 model year. The GT features remained available with the Sports Accent option group in 1977, the final year of the Comet and of the fifth generation which began in 1971 on the Ford Maverick body. The fifth generation Comet was the Mercury version of the Ford Maverick, with a different grille, taillights and hood.
