Ford had originally planned to replace the Comet and its Maverick counterpart for the 1975 model year, but decided that the updated versions would be built alongside the original Comet, which became the Mercury Monarch and the American Ford Granada, with more standard and optional equipment. 1975 was the last year for the Mercury Comet GT, a muscle car look two door sedan. Underneath it was the same basic chassis used for the Falcon and the original Comet.
