Federally mandated safety bumpers were fitted front and rear for 1973, adding weight to the car. The 225 six was dropped, so the 318 and 340 V8s were the only engines, though late production cars received a slightly more powerful 360 in place of the 340. The oil crisis of 1973 and insurance surcharges on performance cars were by now pushing buyers away from the Barracuda. The oil crisis of 1973 added to the pressure on a car that was already in decline.
