For 1972 new net horsepower ratings and emission rules made the engines look much weaker on paper and slowed quarter mile times. The body was nearly the same as in 1971 with a cleaner grille, new taillights and surface mounted side marker lights. The 426 Hemi was dropped, and only five cars with the 440 Six Barrel were built before that engine was cancelled in the fall of 1971 because it could not meet the stricter rules. Petty again won the NASCAR championship in a Road Runner based car.
