The 1971 model was the first piston powered Familia sold in the United States, in two and four door forms, beside its rotary counterpart the Mazda R100 coupe. In September 1971 Mazda introduced the Grand Familia and the Savanna to compete better with the Toyota Corolla and the Nissan Sunny in North America. The US model had a 1.2 liter engine of 58 horsepower, and the pickup models were built until 1991 for markets such as South Africa.
