The Pinto went on sale on 11 September 1970 as a 1971 model, at first only as a fastback sedan with an enclosed trunk, and the hatchback, marketed as the Runabout, followed on 20 February 1971 at the Chicago show. Engines were an English 1.6 liter and a German 2.0 liter. Over 100,000 had sold by January, and 352,402 in the whole model year. Ford chairman Henry Ford II bought a Runabout as a personal car, and the first recalls came in October 1970 and March 1971.
