The new 1969 Polara wore a broad shouldered streamlined design, called the fuselage design, which would continue for five model years. New safety requirements included front seat head restraints. The Polara 500 model was reintroduced for the 1969 model year, available as either a convertible or a hardtop coupe. The 1969 California Highway Patrol Polara held the record on the Chrysler test track in Chelsea, Michigan, until 1994 for the highest top speed achieved by a factory built four door sedan, 149.6 miles per hour.
