A redesign was introduced for the 1968 model year, continuing the similarity to the Galaxie series, and in a cost saving decision the station wagons carried over the 1966 and 1967 bodies from the cowl back. Early production base V8 Fairlanes had the two barrel 289 cubic inch engine, while later units came with the 302. The Torino premium subseries was introduced the same year. The Fairlane's sixth generation also included the Torino subseries, introduced as the premium line.
