The Familia in 1966 was in its fourth year, with the 1000 coupe of November 1965 and the saloons, wagon, van and pickup, joined by the larger Mazda Luce in 1966. The Familia 1000 coupe used the 985 cc SOHC PC engine, and the line was waiting for the new Familia of November 1967, which kept the pushrod 987 cc engine of the saloons that preceded it. The car was a small rear wheel drive model sold in Japan and exported abroad.
