For 1966 the Galaxie name was dropped from the LTD, and as with the Galaxie line it received a minor exterior revision, including a split grille. Front disc brakes became an option. The launch of the LTD had triggered rivals, starting with a mid year introduction by Chevrolet of its top of the line Caprice, then AMC's Ambassador DPL in 1966, Plymouth's Fury VIP and Dodge's Monaco. The LTD of 1966 was a hardtop sedan in two door and four door forms.
