The Familia was introduced to the Japanese market in time for the 1964 Summer Olympics. The van was joined in April 1964 by a plusher Familia wagon, in October by a four door saloon and in November by a two door saloon, and a pickup version was also available from November 1964. Other Mazdas of the time included the Carol, a four door version of the R360, which was discontinued in 1964. The Familia name means family in Latin, and export versions were sold as the 800, 1000, 1200 and 1300.
