The first production Familia, styled by a young Giorgetto Giugiaro while he worked at Carrozzeria Bertone, appeared in October 1963, as Mazda's small family car. It was launched as a van, a rear wheel drive utility model, and was to be joined by saloons and a wagon. The Familia name means family in Latin, and the car was the start of a line that lasted until 2003, sold abroad as the 800, 1000, 1200 and 1300 and later the 323.
