The Taunus 12M P4 of 1964 was similar in size to the older 12M but completely new, based on the Ford Cardinal project, with a new body, a V4 engine and front wheel drive. The 17M P3 of 1964 was the last of that line before the P5 of the same autumn. The Taunus was the family car of Ford Germany, sold under the 12M, 15M, 17M, 20M and 26M names over several generations. It was named after the Taunus mountain range in Germany and was often a close relative of a British Ford.
