The 1963 Galaxie was essentially unchanged apart from freshening and added trim, with reshaped windshields and a four door hardtop 500 and XL added. A lower fastback roofline was added mid year to make the big cars more competitive on NASCAR tracks, creating the 1963½ model, the industry's first official half year model. The 260 and then 289 small block V8 replaced the 292 as the base V8, and a 427 replaced the 406 in limited numbers for racing.
