For 1962 the Galaxie name was applied to all of Ford's full size models, as the Fairlane name moved to a new intermediate model and the Custom was temporarily retired. A new top Galaxie 500 offered plusher interiors, and the XL had sportier trim, as Ford's response to the Chevrolet Impala Super Sport, with a 406 cubic inch engine optional. Late in the production run Ford's Experimental Garage built 11 lightweight Galaxies with fiberglass panels and aluminum parts.
