The Fairlane name moved to Ford's new intermediate, introduced for the 1962 model year to bridge the gap between the compact Falcon and the full size Galaxie, and to compete with GM's A body senior compacts, the Plymouth Belvedere and the AMC Rambler. All 1962 Fairlanes had B posts, in spite of the popularity of pillarless hardtops and convertibles, and the Sports Coupe center console came from the Falcon parts bin.
