A new top level full size model was introduced at mid year 1959, the Ford Galaxie, which displayed both Fairlane 500 and Galaxie badging on the 1959 car. Following the introduction of the Galaxie the Fairlane 500 and Fairlane became Ford's base models, equivalent to the Chevrolet Bel Air and Biscayne, until the Fairlane was repackaged as an intermediate in 1962. It was one of the full size Fords of the last year of the second generation, which ran from 1957 to 1959.
