AM General is an American manufacturer of heavy and military vehicles based in South Bend, Indiana, best known as the builder of the military Humvee and the civilian Hummer. The company traces its line back through Willys-Overland, Kaiser-Jeep and American Motors, which in 1971 made the General Products Division of Jeep a wholly owned subsidiary and named it AM General Corporation. It opened its Humvee plant at Mishawaka, Indiana, in 1984, and later assembled the Hummer H2 there for General Motors. From 1974 through 1979 it also built more than 5,400 transit buses. In this atlas the AM General make gathers the trucks and utility vehicles the company designed and built, with the Hummer civilian line kept under its own make.
