M816 Wrecker

Trucks and Commercial Road Vehicles

The M816 medium wrecker is the recovery truck of the M809 series of 5-ton 6x6 military trucks, made by AM General from 1970 for the United States Army. Its revolving hydraulic crane has a boom that extends from 10 to 18 feet and lifts 20,000 pounds with outriggers and boom jacks set to the ground, but only 3,000 pounds with the boom fully extended and no outriggers. A 20,000 pound winch sits at the front and a 45,000 pound winch at the rear, and the truck can tow 14 tons on the road or 10 tons across country. The Army built it to pull medium duty equipment through rough terrain.
