The M939 series is a family of five-ton 6x6 United States military heavy trucks, designed in the late 1970s to replace the M39 and M809 series and in service ever since. The basic cargo versions were meant to carry a 10,000-pound load over all terrain in all weather. In 1982 AM General began rebuilding M809 trucks into the M939 and M939A1 series at its South Bend, Indiana plant, giving them a new cab and hood, an automatic transmission and new transfer cases, and rebuilt 24,100 of them. The all-new M939A2 series was then built by Bowen-McLaughlin-York in Marysville, Ohio. The family grew into cargo and dump trucks, semi-tractors, vans and wreckers, with 44,590 produced in all, and the article records that the M1083 to M1091 Medium Tactical Vehicles replaced the series in 1991.
