Roewe is a Chinese automotive brand owned by the state-owned automaker SAIC Motor since 2006. Its first models were based on technology SAIC bought after the collapse of the British carmaker MG Rover in 2005. SAIC could not buy the Rover name, which stayed with BMW and later passed to Ford and then Jaguar Land Rover, so it created Roewe as a replacement. The name is a transliteration of the Chinese characters Rongwei, roughly meaning glorious power, and SAIC has also said it derives from the German word Loewe, meaning lion. The first car to carry the badge was the Roewe 750, a development of the Rover 75, and the range later grew through the 550, 350, W5 and the RX, i and Marvel series. Outside China, Roewe-derived models are mostly sold under the MG marque. In 2020 SAIC introduced an electric offshoot, R Brand, which became Rising Auto and was rolled back into Roewe in 2024 as its premium electric line.
