Packard, formerly the Packard Motor Car Company, was an American luxury automobile company based in Detroit, Michigan. The first Packard automobiles were produced in 1899, and the last Packards were built in South Bend, Indiana, in 1958. It was one of the Three Ps, alongside Peerless and Pierce-Arrow, known before the Second World War for high-quality luxury cars. Packard vehicles featured innovations including the modern steering wheel, air conditioning in a passenger car and one of the first production 12-cylinder engines, adapted from the development of the Liberty L-12 aircraft engine of the First World War. During the Second World War the company built Merlin V-12 engines under contract with Rolls-Royce and updated Liberty engines for United States Navy PT boats. After the war it struggled as an independent maker, merged with Studebaker to form the Studebaker-Packard Corporation, and the Packard brand was phased out in 1959.
