After a four year gestation period the new front wheel drive Cavalier was introduced on 26 August 1981, launched simultaneously with the identical new generation of the Opel Ascona, which was sold across the world in various guises on General Motors' J body platform. Following the British public's reluctance to embrace the Ford Sierra's radical styling, the Cavalier overtook the Sierra in sales in 1984 and again in 1985. Its model years run from 1982 to 1988.
