The S50 was launched in 1967 with mostly the same mechanical parts as before and extra equipment, and it swapped the X frame of the S40 for a perimeter frame that protected passengers better in a collision. The range grew to include a station wagon, pickups and, in October 1968, a two door hardtop personal luxury car, while the bigger 2.0 and 2.3 liter engines let buyers who wanted more power move up within the Crown. It was the last generation with pickup versions, as the Hilux took over in 1971.
