In April 1978 Toyota began production of the Mark I Supra in Japan, as the Celica XX. The new generation offered more safety, power and fuel economy than previous models and won Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year for 1978, and in August 1978 the Japanese lineup was revised to have only 49 different models. It was model year 2 of 4 in the Toyota Celica (second generation, A40 and A50), 1977 to 1981, coming after the 1977 model year and before the 1979 model year. Model year pages for the Toyota Celica run from 1970 to 2006.
