Production of the second generation Celica began in August 1977 and it was released for the 1978 model year, again in both notchback coupe and liftback forms. The North American Celica of 1977 was the last with the older body and 5 mph bumpers, which stayed until the end of the first generation in 1977. This was the first model year of the Toyota Celica (second generation, A40 and A50), 1977 to 1981, which took over from the Toyota Celica (first generation, A20 and A30); the 1978 model year follows it. Model year pages for the Toyota Celica run from 1970 to 2006.
