The Rex of 1984 was in its fourth year as a front wheel drive hatchback and carried the on demand four wheel drive that had been added late the year before. The system was engaged electrically by pressing a switch embedded on top of the shift lever, and the car also formed the base of the Justy, which Subaru started selling in 1984. In the European markets, this car was originally marketed as the Subaru 600 or Mini Jumbo.
