Optional on demand four wheel drive reached the Rex after October 1983, which was a first in the kei class and worked by pressing a switch set into the top of the gear lever. In December 1983 a turbocharger became an option on the four wheel drive car, added to counter the extra weight of the drivetrain. Power remained at 31 PS, with a twin-barrel carburettor. The Rex Dinos trim level was sold by mail order. The second generation Rex also formed the basis for the larger Subaru Justy.
