In 1985 the Rex continued in the second generation, offered in Japan as a three or five door hatchback with a two cylinder engine and a choice of front wheel drive or the electrically engaged four wheel drive. A turbocharged model sat at the top of the four wheel drive range, and the car was still sold in Europe as the Subaru 700 with its larger engine. Power remained at 31 PS, with a twin-barrel carburettor. The Rex Dinos trim level was sold by mail order.
