In March 1978 a Swingback body was added to the Rex lineup, a two door sedan with a large rear window that opened upward, which gave direct access to the luggage space from outside the car. The larger glass meant a slightly smaller opening to the engine bay, but Subaru judged that a fair exchange. The Rex 550 was marketed in most export markets as the Subaru 600. The Rex was available in commercial use versions as well as in a passenger car version.
