Rex output was set at 28 PS for the 1976 model year after the thermal and thermodynamic emissions control system arrived in December 1975. New rules for kei cars that year let Subaru offer the larger engined Rex 5 in May, a version with a 490 cc engine that was sold in export markets as the Subaru 500 and lasted only twelve months. The name Rex comes from the Latin word for king. The Rex superseded the R-2 as Subaru's kei car.
