The Subaru Rex went on sale in 1972 as the replacement for the R-2 and as the new kei car of the brand. Its first form was a two door sedan with a rear mounted, water cooled 356 cc two stroke engine making between 32 and 37 PS, in sporty GSR, touring TS and plain trim levels. The car kept the swing axle of its predecessors but wore a newly drawn body. The Rex was available in commercial use versions as well as in a passenger car version.
